Q: What do you
actually make?
A: We specialize in solid timber period furniture
and joinery. Some of our range is; -WINDOWS-double
hung either box frame with pulleys and weights or
spiral balances,-DOORS-Entrance doors and units with
or without bolection moulding and cricket bats,
Internal doors, Screen doors, French doors and
French door units, i-fold units,-SHOP FRONTS- VANITY
UNITS, WASHSTANDS and LAUNDRY CUPBOARDS etc-,MOULDINGS, Skirting, Architrave, Picture
rail, Dado, inlay etc (we can grind cutters to match
existing),-KITCHENS-and Kitchen cupboard
doors,-FIREPLACE MANTLES-SOLID TIMBER PERIOD
FURNITURE-FURNITURE RESTORATIONS-and we even sell
EXOTIC AND JOINERY TIMBERS etc.etc.etc.
Q: What timbers do you use?
A: We use a large variety of cabinet and joinery
timbers. For joinery we use primarily Red Cedar (Toona
Kalantas) and New Guinea Rosewood (Pterocarpus
indicus) for sashes and frames and Kwila (Intsia
bijuga) or New Guinea Rosewood for sills and treads.
For furniture construction we use the above species
as well as ,Clear Hoop Pine, Tasmanian
Blackwood, Myrtle, Brazillian Mahogany, Kauri
Pine, Jarrah, Victorian Ash, American Oak, NSW Coachwood
etc,etc,etc.
Q: What styles do you make?
A: We specialize in early Australian furniture and
joinery up to and including federation but we do
other period styles from around the world when
requested. Sorry but we will not build modern
furniture.
Q: Is your furniture solid timber and how well is
it made?
A: All of our furniture is hand made from solid
timber utilizing traditional methods of construction
including dovetail joints, mortise and tenon joints
etc. More modern techniques are also employed where
necessary.
Q: How do you finish your furniture?
A: In 95% of cases we spray 30% nitrocellulose
lacquer to polish furniture. This product is far more
durable than traditional methods although we still
do use shellac as well for certain jobs. We have a
colour matching service available so your new
furniture can blend in with your existing
decor. Vanity unit tops, kitchen bench tops and other
high moisture areas are finished in 2 pack
polyurethane.
Q: Do you custom design and build
special orders?
A: Yes, we can design furniture to suit your
needs or you are quite welcome to design your own
furniture. We will assist you in all aspects of the
design stage if required.
Q: Are your joinery products authentic to detail?
A: Yes, We have ground cutters to match those used
in the 19th century from existing joinery and from
early drawings. All sashes and doors are wedged
mortise and tenon construction for superior strength
and authentic look.
